Waiting on Wednesday (2)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly Meme started by Breaking the Spine. It is a feature that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating

I did not start reading Lisa Kleypas by way of her historical romances like most people. I wasn't the biggest fan of historical romances. Once I read the first book in the Hathaway series called Mine Till Midnight I was completely hooked. I love all the characters she introducted and couldn't wait to read the rest in the series.

The fourth Hathaway novel comes out May 25 and I'm anxiously awaiting to see how Leo Hathaway is portrayed in this novel. He has been shown as a complete rake in the first 3 novels. I love how all the characters are a bit quirky and very much out of the ordinary. They are spunky and don't fit the mould of the time perioud.

What's your "waiting on" pick this week?

Review ~*~ The Scent of Shadows by Vicki Pettersson

Mass Market Paperback: 464 pages
Publisher: Eos (February 27, 2007)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0060898917
ISBN-13: 978-0060898915

I bought this book last year at a charity sale and it sat on my book shelf because all my local book stores did not have the following books in the series. I decided to read it for the new author challenge I'm participating in. I absolutely loved it! I loved the main character of Joanna Archer. She was feisty, spunky and intelligent. I really like how a lot of the female characters in urban fantasy/paranormal romance are portrayed as strong, independent, intelligent, spunky and feisty women.

Vicki Pettersson has totally broken away from the typical urban fantasy world. I was so shocked reading it that I had to re-read parts because I just wanted to make sure what I had read happened. I believe this is what makes a good writer when you have readers in disbelief! Joanna, the main character, comes to realize that she's part of an underground group of individuals that help keep Las Vegas safe. She is in fact the Archer of the Zodiac Troop of Light. There are two zodiac troops of tweleve one is Light (the good) and the other is Dark (the bad). Joanna's mother was a Light Zodiac and her father was a Dark Zodiac. She is a prized warrior in her own right and the first of her kind. The book is her transformation from Joanna the photographer to Joanna the warrior.

There was a bit of romance but honestly it could have been taken out and it would not have made much of a differnce . I kept hoping that Joanna would go back to Ben but it never happened. I will keep reading to see if she goes back to Ben in future books. Perhaps, this was her way to get readers to read more. Give us a little bit of romance and dangle it on a stick.

This book is definitely more urban fantasy than paranormal romance. Since the romance was only a tiny part of the story. The dark and mysterious world was too hard and gritty to lend itself to much romance.

It is so hard for me to review this book without giving too much of the plot away. It is such a balance between a book review and a book report. I would recommend this book to anyone that is a fan of Kim Harrison's series The Hollows. The writing of the alternate world is lush and full of description that makes you feel that you are there. I was never guessing of what exactly this "other" world looked like. The secondary characters were well introduced with a lot of room to get to know them better in future books.

The first novel in a series is usually hit or miss. JR Ward Dark Lover, was one that I didn't really like but continued to read the other books in the series which I'm glad I did. With The Scent of the Zodiac I will want to re-read it before I read the second book, since there is just so much description and so much going on that I felt like I missed things. I think with a second go of the novel I will enjoy it even better. For a first novel in a series I think it was better than most first novels. It was well paced and action packed. A good mix between dialogue, description and suspense. I gave it because I do like a little more romance in my books.

Rogue

Photobucket
Publisher:Mira
The following ISBNs are associated with this title:
ISBN - 10:0778329143
ISBN - 13:9780778329145

I read Stray, the first book in the Shifters series not that long ago, and I fell in love with the series. The series follows Faythe Sanders, a female werecat. She is the daughter of the Alpha of her pack. In Rogue, Faythe finds herself back with her ex fiancee Marc, and is now an enforcer.

Strays(humans that are turned into werecats by bites or scratches from a werecat) are turning up dead, and their deaths are suspicious. At the same time, Faythe starts receiving weird phone calls from her ex, Andrew.

The pack receives some startling information about who exactly is killing the strays, and the hunt is on. Faythe also finds out some scary and shocking information about why Andrew is contacting her, and finds herself in a heap of trouble.

This book was action packed, and had the perfect amount of romance. It was a refresher in the supernatural genre, as I haven't seen a werecat series before. It was also awesome to see such a strong female lead. I would definitely recommend this series, and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book in the series.

I would give this book Photobucket

Thoughtful Thursday ~ Aubrey's Musings on books

Unfortunately I have no pretty graphics. Computers and I don't get along very well but I hope you would still enjoy my incessant prattle about books without them.

Today will be mismatch of things that are on my mind about books at the moment. I hope that people would give me suggestions or I'll start coming up with a weekly topic. I'm very new in the book blogging community. At first, I was just plain scared to start one because I did not want to fail at it. But, after, reading many people's blogs; I knew that you really couldn't fail as long as you kept at and posted often.

I'm really enjoying the whole process of book blogging. Reading other blogs, twitting about my blog and re-twitting for other book bloggers and interacting with authors. Its been quite an experience, so far and I love that I'm always learning new things everyday. I feel that I've joined a community of people that get me. That understand the thrill of finding that perfect book or waiting for your favourite author to publish something new. What made you decide to become a book blogger? What are your tips for new book bloggers?

I learned something new today about NY Times and their book best seller stats. The wonderful Susan Mallery helped me out on this tidbit! Did you know that if you find a book out earlier than its official release date it doesn't count to their NY Times Stats. This is what Susan Mallery (Check out her fb fan page. She's awesome! Lots of fun questions and the chance to interact with her directly. She always answers my questions and I love it!) responded to my question on her facebook fan page
Hi, Aubrey! Thanks for your question. I would never want to discourage someone from buying the book whenever it works best into your schedule, but yes, to count toward the NYT statistics for the week it opens, the book must be purchased after the offical release date. In the case of CHASING PERFECT, that's April 27.
I know that in the scheme of things that one book won't make a difference but it felt a lot like voting to me. I want my purchase of her new book to count so I will wait till the 27th to buy it. I find that some books come out earlier in Canada than they do in the United States. From now on I will wait to the official release date.

I love learning things such as this and hope that through blogging and the interaction with bloggers and authors I will gain confidence in myself to start writing my own romance novels. I have notebooks with ideas but haven't built up enough gumption to start the actual writing process. I love how some authors do not make themselves unapproachable or uninterested in their fans. To me, it makes reading so much better when I know the author is such a laid-back and engaging person.

Books have always been so important to me that this new adventure has opened up new reading adventures. I have some silly book buying quirks. I can't have a mix of hardcover and paper back in a series. They have to be all paper back. I can't read hardcover often because of the weight of them. I do, however, take hardcover out from the library waiting for the paper back version to come out. I don't read reviews of books till I have finished the novel myself. I don't want other people's reviews to take away from my reading pleasure. I cannot read a book mid series even if the author states they can be read as stand-alone novels. What are your reading quirks?

I hope you have enjoyed my first Thoughtful Thursday and will read many more!

Publisher:Berkley Mass Market

ISBN - 13:9780425216149

I saw the third book in this series at the library and it looked pretty good. So I put Witch Fire on hold. I usually like anything supernatural, so I figured this would be no different. First page into it, I realized that it was totally different then what I was used to.

The book follows Mira, a very strong air witch. At the beginning of the book, she is unaware that she has powers. A very strong warlock is trying to kidnap her to use her to close a circle. The local coven has sent Jack, a powerful fire witch to protect her. While in his care, he starts to teach her how to use her powers.

Mira isn't under Jack's care for a night before the sexual attraction sets in. I have never seen so much sex in a single book before. I don't mind the occasional scene, but I felt that the sex scenes were overpowering the actual storyline. I think the book would have been better without the majority of the sex scenes. I also got irritated that Jack and Mira fell so deeply in love, when all they did together was have sex.

The storyline was a good one though, and I will read the rest of the series. I would give this book Photobucket, simply because there was too much sex.

My teaser:

Review ~*~ Witchling by Yasmine Galenorn

Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
Publisher: Berkley; 1st edition (October 3, 2006)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0425212548
ISBN-13: 978-0425212547

Throughout my years of lurking on the amazon paranormal romance and urban fantasy boards one book series got mentioned over and over again. That series is The Otherworld or also called Sisters of the Moon by Yasmine Galenorn. At first I was a bit shocked at how short they were since I'm used to books that are close to 400 pages or more. However, once I started reading I realized how big of a punch her books really are. They may be shorter than the average novel but they are jammed packed with more description and characterization than most novels.

The first book is about Camille D'Artigo. One of the trio of sisters that are half-human and half-faerie. Not only are they of mixed blood but each sister also possesses a special extra identity to them. Camille, is also part witch where her spells sometimes work and sometimes don't. Delilah, is a shape shifter that shifts into cat form when stressed or upset. Menolly, is a vampire that is newly turned so she is still learning her way around the vampire world. All three of them are operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. I really felt that Galenorn really cared about her characters. That each character was imbued with something special from the author's world.

A giant has been murdered who was also an operation for OIA. The three sisters along with a sprite, human OIA operative, a dragon, and Morio are trying their hardest to figure out what has happened. It is suspected that demons are getting through to Earth. The secondary characters are very well developed with their own distinct personalities. So much so, you just want to read each book as fast as you can.

I did have a love hate relationship with Galenorn's description of what the characters were wearing. I liked knowing but would think does it really matter? But in the end it made the story better as a whole. You got so much detail that you really did feel like you were there. The story was very layered and textured. I loved that each sister had more than just their half-human/half-faerie identity.

I read a blog recently stating that it helps readers to compare books to other books. I don't think its possible for the world that Galenorn has created. It is so different with new insight into the paranormal/fantasy world that has been recreated by so many authors as of late. I will definitely recommend this book and the rest of the series to people. I did give it out of 5 babies because I was not wanting to read it 24/7 till I was finished. It was an excellent book but not as captivating as I had hoped.

This is the fourth book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. I fell in love with the television show True Blood first, and decided to read the books after. I found as good as the show is, the books are way better. If you're a fan of supernatural books, this series is the one for you. Harris certainly caters to all fans with a little bit of everything.

We are introduced to witches and faeries(briefly) in this book. Evil witches erase Eric's memory, and he stays with Sookie for protection. You can see the bond between Sookie and Eric forming in this book. She also finally falls for him, and Eric finally gets what he was been trying to get for quite some time.

There is lots of action, and one huge battle scene. I won't talk about the outcome, because I don't want to ruin the book for people who haven't read it yet. But this book was by far my favourite in the series.I can't wait to get the next book in the series and to see where Harris takes Sookie next!

I would rate this book Photobucket.

I had never heard of this book series until the movie came out earlier this year. When I saw the previews I knocked it as a juvenile book and never thought anything else about it. But then I have been hearing things about this book, about how great it was, from people of all ages. I even heard it compared to Harry Potter, I had to check it out.

I was hooked from the first chapter. The book follows Percy Jackson, a 12 year old boy who hasn't had a typical life. It turns out he is a half blood. Half human and half God. It turns out that all the Greek Mythology creatures and Gods are alive, and most of them have children. He finds himself at a camp and makes some close friends.

But it turns out a war is brewing on Olympus. Zeus' main thunderbolt is missing, and Percy is the suspect. He sets off on a quest with 2 of his friends to find the thunderbolt and return it to Zeus before a major war erupts. Oh and he only has 10 days to do it.

Every chapter it seems like a different challenge awaits them. I was glued to the pages. Anyone who liked Harry Potter will love it, and anyone who is interested in Greek Mythology will love it as well. I definitely recommend it, and can't wait to read the next book in the series. I give it Photobucket

This is the third book in the Women of the Otherworld series. I love paranormal books, and Kelley Armstrong did not disappoint. The first two books in the series revolve around Elena, a female werewolf. In the last book, Stolen, we are introduced to Paige, a coven witch, who Dime Store Magic revolves around.

In Stolen, someone was kidnapping supernatural beings. Elena runs into Savannah, who's mother is a witch and father is a sorceror. Paige ends up taking her in to try and get her into her coven. And Leah, a very powerful half demon wants Savannah for herself because she is so powerful.

Dime Store Magic starts off with Paige and Savannah living there lives. Savannah still hasn't been accepted into the coven. You find out that Leah approached Savannah's father, a very powerful sorceror about trying to gain custody of his daughter. Paige finds herself under major public scrutiny when Leah starts setting her up. The custody battle starts to get a little more interesting when Paige hires a sorceror lawyer, Lucas.

The pressure on Leah for Savannah increases when Savannah gets her period for the first time. On the eighth day, a ceremony must be performed in order for Savannah to truly pick a side in the witch world.

As soon as Lucas enters into the plot, you can tell something was going to happen between him and Paige. I just wasn't expecting it to take so long.

I was very satisfied with the ending. I think Armstrong did an excellent job with the plot and the development of the characters. I would definitely recommend it, and I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would give it Photobucket

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly Meme started by Breaking the Spine It is a feature that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating

I'm quite excited for May to come. Not because it will be closer to summer and closer to the end of early mornings for school but because Cindy Gerard 's newest novel in the Black Ops Inc series is out.

Risk No Secrets is the 5th book in Cindy Gerard's Black Ops Inc. series. I read the first 4 in a week. I loved the books and will definitely be rereading them again. The men are all strong, silent and broken till they find their strong, independent and sassy dream girl. The hero in this book is Wyatt "Papa Bear" Savage. I've been yearning for his story since the first book.

Counting down the days to its release. Waiting anxiously! I need my uber alpha male fix. I do not read a lot of romantic suspense but her novels have piqued my interest in the genre the same way Linda Lael Miller did for Romantic Westerns.

I've heard about this book from all over the place. I have heard nothing but good things, and it fit in for one of my challenges, so I picked it up. I found it to be a very easy read personally. It had a very quick storyline and everything flowed really well.

The book follows Jane Jameson. She is a recently fired librarian. The only thing she really had going for her was her job. As a result, she went out and got drunk, which is where she meets Gabiel Nightengale. Jane leaves, and is mistaken for a deer by a drunken hunter and left for dead. Gabriel, who is a vampire, finds her and to save her life changes her to a vampire.

Her first day as a vampire she realizes that she can see her dead aunt's ghost, and she attacks her best friend. As the story unfolds, you realize someone has it out to get her. As things start to get more dangerous for Jane, things start heating up with Gabriel. I think for a vampire book that the sex scene took to long to show up.

The dialogue with her family is priceless and the only amusing part of the book.
Ultimatly the plot was pretty basic, but if it was able to catch you it was amusing. I enjoyed it, and I will read the sequel.

I would rate it Photobucket.

If easy read vampire books are you thing, I would say pick it up for sure.

Jennifer Weiner~book club review~ Good in Bed

Paperback: 400 pages
Publisher: Washington Square Press (April 2, 2002)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0743418174
ISBN-13: 978-0743418171

I belong to a parenting forum called mom2mom. We have a book club that I belong too and the latest book was Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner. At first it took me awhile to get into the book. It wasn't that I disliked the book or anything. I think it was just getting used to reading a non-paranormal novel.

I really liked the main character Cannie. She reminded me a lot of myself. The apparent dislike for her body and feeling larger than everyone else is exactly how I feel. Her quirky family reminds me of mine. My mother isn't gay or my parents weren't divorced nor are we Jewish but we are a close family who care for each other.

This book is centered around Cannie Shapiro who is a writer who was on a break from her boyfriend Bruce when she reads an article that Bruce wrote about her in a magazine called Moxie. Bruce, wrote an article about loving a larger woman. Cannie is devastasted and can't believe he would do something like this to her. The book goes on to explain their relationship and where it went wrong. Without giving too much away the secondary characters were just as quirky as her. Peter, her Doctor, from the Diet study; Sam, her best friend; Maxi, actress friend; her mother and her partner Tanya and Bruce, the evil Satan ex.

I hated Bruce for what she put her through during her pregnancy. I could relate because I know how hard it is to be alone during a pregnancy. True, we both had family and friends around us but it is not the same as a partner. The pregnancy was how she truly found herself. She realized that it doesn't matter what weight you are, what clothes you wear or who you know but rather who you are as a person.

I would definitely recommend this book to others who like this genre of light-hearted coming of age books. Yes, it is not the typical coming of age novels where the main character grows up during grade school or high school but it is a book of learning to love yourself and becoming who you are in your 20's. As someone who is in her last year of her 20's I know that who I am now is drastically different than who I was when I was 20. I've change so much and really came into my own. It is not a book I would normally read lately since I've been on a parnormal romance/urban fantasy kick but I'm glad I did. I laughed in parts and cried in parts. I give this book 4 out of 5 . I look forward to reading the sequel to this book Certain Girls.

YA books and my reluctance to read them

I'm not sure if its because I started reading books by King, Koontz, Steel etc. by a very young age or if its because when I was considered an YA there weren't that many authors writing in this genre, but either way I've had this anti-YA book stance for a long time.

I don't like that I do and its not that I look down on those who read from this genre I just don't see how they would appeal to me.

But I'm ready to give my reading mind a shake. Please send me recommendations on your favourite YA books. I love series but they don't have to be in a series.

Jenn my co-blogger has read a lot of YA books. So I will be asking her for recommendations as well.

I will also be checking out my favourite authors who write in both genres.

Review~*~ Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

# Mass Market Paperback: 384 pages
# Publisher: Avon (October 30, 2007)
# Language: English
# ISBN-10: 0061245089
# ISBN-13: 978-0061245084

I really enjoyed this book and was laughing at parts but really I could not put it down. It is the first book in Jeaniene Frost 's The Night Huntress Series in which Cat is the main character. She is such a feisty and sassy person. She knew what she wanted and went after it not caring about what got in her way.

She is part vampire and part human. Her mother was raped by a vampire. She does not need to drink blood to survive but has extra abilities because of her part-vampire status. Her mother hates vampires which led to Cat becoming a vampire slayer. She was content killing vampires on the weekends till she met Bones. A vampire who knew what she was doing. They made a deal and became partners. Partners who became lovers.

Without giving up too much of the story line I will say that it was a great read. Frost interjected new life into vampire lore. However, I do think it took a bit too long for the romance to start. It took to page 159 before the romance started. It was not a bad thing that the romance took so long because it certainly kept me reading at a fast pace to figure out when it would happen.

I like the fact that Cat finally realizes that maybe vampires are not so bad after all. Considering that she is part vampire and dating one. Bones is the one who got her to see what she really does have instead of what she does not. Life for her is not as hard as she sees it.

The secondary characters were well thought out and funny as heck. I loved Timmie who was Cat's neighbour in her new apartment. He had the best line that gave her an epiphany about her relationship with Bones. Her mother would have not liked that she was dating a vampire and she told Timmie that she didn't like foreigners because she didn't want him to know she was in fact dating a vampire. He said Everyone's go something in them that somebody's going to have a problem with, but your mom should be more concerned about whether he makes you happy than where he's from. This quote simply means it doesn't matter if he's English or a vampire as long as she's happy everyone else should be too.

I read this book for the NAC Mini-Challenge: Battle Royale | Literary Escapism but would have read it anyways since it has been on my TBR pile for weeks. I'm glad I did and now I see what all the fuss was about. I will recommend this book to others and can't wait to read the rest in the series.

I'm giving this book 5 Photobucket because it will be on to be read again shelf!

My First Review

I picked up House Rules by Jodi Picoult - at the local library.(I am a big advocate of the library!). I had picked it up simply because I have read every other book by Jodi Picoult. She is one of my favourite authors, and I had a feeling she wouldn't disappoint, and I was right!

House Rules is about Jacob Hunt, a teenage boy with Asperger's syndrome. Picoult does an awesome job giving the readers symptoms of Asperger's and even Autism. She clearly did her homework on the subject, and was able to grasp what a teen with Aspergers would be like. Jacob, like most people with AS has a special focus, some might even say obession. It's where they learn everything and anything about a topic. In Jacob's case it's forensics. He knows more about forensics and DNA than most police officers. He always shows up at crime scenes to witness everything firsthand and give them tips.

When his social skills tutor comes up dead, the police automatically come to him for answers. What they weren't expecting was the way he answered questions, his tone, etc which are all a part of having AS. Taking these signs as guilt, Jacob is pinned with the murder of his tutor.

Like any other Picoult book, it has a twist of an ending, that I personally was not expecting. She developed all her characters amazingly. I felt empathy for all of them throughout the book.

I would definitely recommend this book to everyone. Picoult fans will love it, as it has all the elements of a Picoult book. Plus it will also attract new fans as well!

I would give this book Photobucket.

It's a definite must read!

Well, that's my first review! I was nervous enough with it being my first book review ever. Then after reading Aubrey's, I got even more nervous! Can't wait to do the next one.
